League of Legends: Wild Rift Among Esports to Feature in SEA Games 2021

A report by Vietnamese publication Gamek.VN revealed the new mobile adaptation of popular MOBA League of Legends, subtitled “Wild Rift,” will feature as an esports medal event in the upcoming 2021 SEA Games.

This news is also confirmed in a post by the Twitter account for Wild Rift Esports Project Manager @chisinRPL: “Wild Rift will have two medaled events – Wild Rift Male and Wild Rift Female Categories.”

The Gamek.VN report also revealed some other esports titles that will feature in this year’s SEA Games, which is set to commence on November 21 in Hanoi, Vietnam. Here’s the full list of games, platforms, and categories:

Mobile Games

  • Wild Rift (Men Category)
  • Wild Rift (Women Category)
  • PUBG Mobile (Team Category)
  • PUB Mobile (Solo Category)
  • Free Fire (Team Category)
  • Mobile Legends: BANG BANG (Team Category)
  • Arena of Valor (Team Category)

PC Games

  • League of Legends (Team Category)
  • FIFA Online 4 (Team Category)
  • Crossfire (Team Category)

There is no official statement regarding the finality of this list, and it may be subject to change in the coming months.

League of Legends: Wild Rift is the newest title among the games included in this year’s esports category. It also has one of the smallest active user bases, averaging around 5.4 million average monthly players. For reference, Mobile Legend: BANG BANG and Arena of Valor, both competitors to Wild Rift that are also featuring in this year’s SEA Games, have 78.5 million and 12 million average monthly players respectively.

Esports debuted as a medaled event at the 2019 SEA Games in Manila, Philippines and featured six games: Mobile Legends: BANG BANG, Arena of Valor, DOTA 2, Tekken 7, Hearthstone, and Starcraft 2. Previously, the discipline was included as a demonstration sport at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.
