After weeks of speculation, Variety has found out which upcoming movie is set to play at this year’s Cannes film festival. According to recent reports, Fast & Furious 9 will be the mystery film and will have a special screening during the 73rd edition of the Cannes Film Festival.
Earlier in May, Cannes chief Thierry Fremaux announced that a “planetary blockbuster” would be making its way to the Cannes Film Festival. When asked about the film, Fremaux stated that it won’t be, No Time to Die, Dune or West Side Story. According to Variety, the mystery film will in fact be Fast & Furious 9 starring Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez and John Cena.
The Cannes film festival was initially cancelled due to the pandemic; however, it will now be taking place from July 6 till 17. The mystery movie will have a special public screening to celebrate its premiere at the French beachfront. The festival will also kick off the opening ceremony by awarding Jodie Foster with an honorary Palme d’Or for her many achievements as an actress. Foster will be the guest of honor
F9 has already been met with financial success after premiering in certain regions outside the United States, most notably China. The movie grossed over$163 million in its opening weekend, which is no easy feat considering low theatre attendance due to the coronavirus pandemic. Many blockbuster movies have been added to streaming services to compensate for this, however F9 is one of the few examples of traditional theatre releases in 2021. Critics have also labelled Fast & Furious 9 as the wildest and biggest movie in the franchise, making us even more excited for the release date.
F9 is set to release in U.S. theaters on June 25, 2021.
