Jamie Spears, father of ‘90s-era pop superstar Britney Spears, has confirmed in court documents this Thursday that he is willing to withdraw from his position as conservator for his daughter. The court documents do not provide a date for his withdrawal, but state that he is prepared to step down “when the time is right.”
The filing follows a request from Britney’s lawyers to remove father Jamie from his role in her conservatorship, a position granted him by a court that left him in full control over his daughter’s career and finances for 13 years. That request was denied by a judge, but Jamie and his legal team say they want to facilitate a smooth transition for the person who will take over as conservator for his daughter.
In the filing, Jamie’s legal team remains steadfast in their belief that the court-appointed conservatorship was necessary to protect Britney and her reputation: “”There is no doubt that the Conservatorship saved Ms. Spears from disaster, supported her when she needed it the most, protected her and her reputation from harm, and facilitated the restoration of her career.”
Jamie’s attorneys maintain that he is “the best choice” to act as her conservator and the agreement to step down was done to avoid a “public feud.” “…He does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests.”
Speaking to CBS News, Britney’s attorney Matthew Rosengart praised Jamie’s willingness to give up his role in Britney’s conservatorship but expressed disappointment in what his side perceived as attacks on Britney. “It is vindication for Britney. We are disappointed, however, by their ongoing shameful and reprehensible attacks on Ms. Spears and others.”
Britney’s mother Lynn Spears responded positively to the news. In a statement by Lynn’s attorney, Gladstone Jones: “Lynne Spears, Britney’s mother, is pleased Jamie has agreed to step down. Lynne entered into this conservatorship to protect her daughter almost 3 years ago. She has accomplished what she set out to do.”
